From Mojo to Michigan: Lessons from Three Alumni Pitchers

Recently, our Mojo softball organization hosted an inspiring Q&A session featuring three of our own who’ve made it to one of the most prestigious collegiate softball programs in the country—the University of Michigan. Lauren Durkowski, Emerson Aiken, and Haley Ferguson shared their journey from Mojo family to Michigan Wolverines, offering invaluable insights for our current players.

The Michigan Transition: More Than Just Athletics

One of the evening’s most impactful discussions centered on the transition from high school to college. Lauren, now a senior in engineering planning to work with Royal Caribbean in Miami, emphasized that time management becomes crucial when balancing demanding academics with Division I athletics.

Haley, a freshman majoring in applied exercise science, echoed this sentiment, highlighting how developing strong study habits in high school can ease the collegiate transition. “The coursework is challenging,” she admitted, “but having good time management skills from the start makes all the difference.”

Choosing the Right Fit

When discussing the recruiting process, both Lauren and Haley stressed looking beyond athletics. “Consider the school’s culture, academics, and personal fit,” they advised. They recommended making emails to coaches unique, being a good teammate at camps, and finding the right balance in communication—consistent but not overwhelming.

“Trust that things will work out,” Lauren reminded our athletes. “The recruiting process can be stressful, but being prepared and patient pays off.”

Memories That Matter

The alumni shared their favorite memories from both their Mojo days and their time at Michigan. Lauren’s highlights included winning the Big 10 tournament and witnessing memorable walk-off home runs. For Haley, putting on the Michigan uniform for the first time was a surreal moment she’ll never forget.

Their shared message? The competitive nature of Mojo pushed them to constantly improve, but it was the focus on teamwork, unity, and personal growth that truly prepared them for collegiate success.

Performance Tips from the Top

The pitchers offered practical advice for aspiring athletes:

  • Mental Game: Lauren shared how music helps her overcome mental blocks, while emphasizing the importance of proper breathing techniques
  • Physical Preparation: Haley recommended specific workouts with Foot Dr. Isaya and stressed how running improved her pitching skills
  • Mindset: Both emphasized not letting age or past failures hold you back

The Pitcher-Catcher Connection

Lauren provided insights on building effective relationships between pitchers and catchers, emphasizing the importance of understanding personality traits and providing encouragement. She noted that while physical skills like maximizing strikes are crucial, the mental connection often makes the difference.

Life Beyond the Diamond

Perhaps the most important message came when discussing what they’d tell their younger selves. Lauren emphasized that softball doesn’t define your identity: “Remember, it’s a sport, not who you are.” Emerson advised keeping the game light and fun, not putting too much pressure on results.

The evening concluded with Lex reminding everyone that these accomplished athletes are still part of our Mojo family. Their journey from our organization to Michigan proves that with the right mindset, preparation, and support system, dreams can become reality.

As Lauren wisely noted, seeking balance—whether through faith, academics, or personal relationships—is key to success both on and off the field. Their message was clear: appreciate the game, the people you meet, and remember that softball is just one part of your incredible journey through life.

Special thanks to Lauren Durkowski, Emerson Aiken, and Haley Ferguson for sharing their time and wisdom with our Mojo softball family. Your success continues to inspire the next generation of players.
